This month’s Amulet of Tears mix comes from Istanbul-based artist Ekin Fil, which is veiled in reechoing wind, freefalling from misty sky.
The mix embodies acoustic qualities over tangibility of the spatial structure of turbulence - the sound, which unites phenomena, a vast world in yielding shafts, pliant brims with billows - stream of rush-hour merged into a single point.
In 2023 Bulgarian DIY booking crew and label Amek Collective celebrate their 15th anniversary. On this occasion, theyʼve prepared 60 minutes of unreleased music by artists and friends. This Amulet of Tears exclusive mix features new studio tracks by some of the label mainstays alongside various live recordings, sketches, and untitled bits from deep within the Amek vaults.
Undveld composed sounds of vital noise, shored against the wondrous ruins for Amulet of Tears.
Inner visions brought into sharper focus on mysterious efflorescence. The gate opens dizzyingly like a sheaf of wolts, beam of torch - a nonbeing can hold. Roaming shift of perspectives comes obscurely like thundering ale, whereas cryptical plateau meets untamed colloquy between phantoms.
Among the inexhaustible striking releases, Undveld is co-running the Lithuanian label static motion and is a part of the Swedish label offworldcolonies.ltd.
Polychrome and insomnolent stains render into serpentine contours - mixed by Drottning Omma for Amulet of Tears.
Monumental heights charmed by coldness, moving into vertiginous mass of emotional resonance. Maelstrom continues in a highly textured collation through ploughed fields, fostering the magnetism of pavers covered with verglas - hear the ashes rise.
Part of the Swedish label - offworldcolonies.ltd - Drottning Omma coalesces an immense stream of palpable grounds.
Ethereally abounding tunes with silken chords held together. Bouquet of melodiousness assembled by Anasisana for Amulet of Tears.
White heat slowly lifting the curtain to greet the scenery of the mix - elegantly escorted and carried by delicate hands that shapes, rather than grounds - interferes into the porous air. All shades of drizzle from every branch drips and swells skyward.
Anasisana comes into the view with his thick glaze of cordial, soul-stirring music pieces which amass over each other - ardently, solidly, fervently.
The trudges through the crepuscule lanes, where cedar branches release the drops and the forest is manumitted from the quietness. Zhe Pechorin gathered the wind-filled assembly for Amulet of Tears.
Guidance and close approach to tenebrous force. Lambently textured mix of meandering piano, long-wave static and clamorous nigrescence draws out the new palette of drones ahead in the raptures of dim, deliberately intoxicating the silence.
Zhe Pechorin is a moniker of Belgrade-based artist Andjelina Micic, who takes the melding influx through the smoke swirling tension.
Palaces of tunable universe march into a picture of thrumming hymns in unison as an intrusion into the ethnic soundscapes surveyed by Night Foundation for Amulet of Tears.
The mix is the scope of foreseen prophets solaced by pertinence - music beyond patterning recognition, where the heeder is a crescent man in the delirious narrative, bound up with a large lens, gained from the observation through a polished grasp.
Richard Vergez is a head of Florida based label - Noir Age, who serves us with solidness of wondrous vertigo under the name - Night Foundation.
Recumbence, placidity and all the graceful gradations of the form of appearances - the new Teatre mix for Amulet of Tears is an inherently charged musical theme of its potent coherence. Stealthy blasts - dynamic shin up and back again to the endearment of ponderous notes, the assemblage as remnants of plethora - looking at the entire world and feeling the tremendous correlation between you and everything, until the thrill of tremor conquers the tight rooms. Teatre irradiates in the last compilation ‘Invisible Cities’ on Amulet of Tears as well as in the perception of the label Lux Rec and among others through the absolute form of his own.
Setting the stone for the 25th entry in our series, Amulet of Tears celebrates its Silver Jubilee with a unique mix from Hong Kong Community Radio resident, producer, and writer R000000M. The Taiwanese artist presents an hour of sound both uncompromising and captivating, unfolding as if it were on a movie screen. Its narrative tells a fantastic story through thoughtful droning meditations, jazz-tinted cityscapes, and colorful sonic panoramas.
Burning Pyre ripples outward a new aural 'alloy' for Amulet of Tears — all filtered through the vapor murmurings of a synthesiser and emerging phonography. The flux as the respective halves float in the immersive aspect of synth drift & cultivates a new modality as an emblem of modernity by syncretic belief. The mix remains largely fertile in impressive arrangement of electronic ingenuity. More broadly, Christopher Macarthur has crafted a graceful approach to contemporary ambient and minimalist works across a number of releases for Opal Tapes, Perfect Aesthetics, Vaagner, Eastern Nurseries and Vienna Press under the moniker Burning Pyre.
Every so often, the Amulet reveals something rare, akin to a pearl or a secret. Today it presents BODYXVIII, an artist based in Melbourne, active in the fields of electronic music and sound collage since 2018. The Australian musician's work spans a deep spectrum across techno pulsations to ambient shimmers, all unified by overarching textures as well as attention to completeness and intermixture. Being no exception, the mix was woven together with original sound collages and field recordings. The artist shares it as a token of his own sonic headspace in the present day.
The music project titled Rose Altar was the first to be released under the Nouvelle Gaze label in 2019, debuting with the cassette 'Catalonia'. The name has since been an inseparable element of the Nouvelle Gaze mythos. The enigmatic imprint has released 19 installments up to today, each part seemingly integral to each other, connected within a fractal of the same crystal structure. Its flagbearer presents a wonderful mix for Amulet of Tears, mostly comprised of original soundtracks from digital worlds, imagined stories, and some revisited classics.
Fortunes Brine is an alias deeply associated with the VAAGNER record label. The moniker has until now mostly been used exclusively for projects related to Vaagner events and releases, also being featured on 2021's static motion compilation 'stasis II'. The unpremeditated, yet unfractured creative direction of Fortunes Brine flows further; the 21st Amulet of Tears invites to heal and breathe.
The 20th Amulet is carried by Verge, the alias of experimental electronic musician André Gough, based in Belfast. Having debuted with a
consummate release on the eminent Avian imprint in 2017, Verge has displayed impeccable artistic focus from day one, continuing to uphold and refine his talent with the album 'Impermanence' released on VEYL in 2020, 'Vignettes' on Perfect Aesthetics and 'Fluid Motion' on Aura Dinamica in 2021. The sound of Verge fuses many echoes of industrial, experimental techno, ambient, and other influences, assuredly rising above genre boundaries and presenting music that's much to admire.
Fusion, re-situate, constraints of genre altogether - the mix from Giugno (Thomas Carney) is an oeuvre in progressive space of sonic possibilities. Morphing into a pastiche could be found between the low ebbs and oscillating din as an exemplary of repeating numerous mental arenas and defeat. Giugno takes a contextural approach of pairing diverse rhythms of myriad functional movements. At the same instant, it allows the listener to let their imagination go bush through guardedly emotional airborne and quivering vistas. Giving a bright tone throughout - Giugno’s most recent full-length album 'Every Morning, Again' was released on Eastern Nurseries label in March 12 of 2021.
The immense soundscapes of Arkhad cannot be mistaken for those of another artist's - each work seems to be completely unrestrained, yet an over-arching sense of structure, a feeling of a looming megalithic presence haunts throughout. The rhythms are irregular and strange, yet palpable. The droning calls and textures appear inorganic, yet certainly feel natural; as if rising from beneath the living earth, from beneath deep layers of stone. The artist has been a known and unique presence in Lithuanian experimental art, traversing through drone, noise, post-industrial techno-hybrids, and many other unknown realms of music over the past decade. Such depths are thoroughly explored in the 18th Amulet of Tears mix.
Cinematic, grand, and pitch-perfect - the following mix from Softie is an awe-inspiring listening experience crafted without a single tone out of place, its scale feeling as immense as possible. It can be sincerely said that the Helsinki-based artist's selection feels like something more than a mix, moments of which are truly capable of leaving the listener speechless. 'It Had Nothing To Do With Summer', an album of electronic compositions, was released under the Eastern Nurseries label in September of 2021. Softie, quite evidently, holds a lot of promise for the future.
The 16th Amulet is a plot full of twists and turns, a mystery unraveling; brief flashes of digital artefacts seems to appear in the landscape that it leads through. Is it real at all? The story is best experienced unspoiled. Concrete Fantasies is a producer from Madrid; his album 'Which Angel Gave Us Their Wings' was released on Audio. Visuals. Atmosphere. in June of 2021. The project explores 'elemental electronics', poetic impressions, and visions of the future, unafraid of wandering into unexplored territory.
A much welcome guest returns for a short stay before heading out again. yolabmi carries the Amulet further, this time telling new stories - ones of strife, challenge and searching for faith. The artist from Japan describes the new mix as one that is particularly sensitive of time, silence and subtraction.
The work of sound artist Ryan Hill from Illinois, USA is better revealed through poetry and imagery rather than verbose descriptions. KAGAMI Smile is his most recent active project, already considerable in its vast output of releases across labels such as Søvn Records and Opal Tapes. His own record label Forgot Imprint, much as his personal production, exhibits digital relics, lost dreams and the innate nostalgic emptiness of the 21st century.

Appropriate Savagery is a familiar name in the realm of ethereal electronics, moreso to the circle of Amulet of Tears - the French artist's work is etched into 'The Birth of Tragedy', while his active production is widely adopted by such record labels as Audio. Visuals. Atmosphere, Perfect Aesthetics, VAKNAR et al. His latest album, 'Behind The Rope, Your Treacherous Smile', is a display of cinematic scenes, fragile, fleeting moments and revealing confessions. For its one-year-of-music anniversary, the Amulet invites an old friend to tell a story of hindrance and perseverance.
Ybalferran is a music project of sound artist and researcher Błażej Kotowski, one of his many projects delving into interdisciplinary sonic phenomena. The sound of Ybalferran is explorative, deliberate, careful and constructive: its minimalist façade reveals a rich sonic palette teeming with untraditional ideas. His Amulet is a journal of travels, influences and recordings of past, a refined exhibition of tones and places.
Together with the unpredictable April showers, a gentle wave of ambient tones washes over our Spring - a transmission from Joshua Stefane a.k.a. Endurance, a Canadian based in Japan, label runner of Muzan Editions, researcher, translator, composer and all-around creative phenom. Endurance is a project of dreamy ambient music decorated by Stefane's love of fiction, film imagery and the vibrancy of our (un)natural world.
The tenth Amulet is an exception: part hymn, part eulogy, part elegy. Against the harmonious backdrop of her musical selection, the voice of FH HF recites chosen poems, including those of Maya Angelou, Andrei Tarkovsky, Forugh Farrokhzad and of her own writing. The soft-spoken lyrical journey, guided by the novel Georgian artist, conveys a heartfelt search for truth in emotion. "I Saw His Plane Taking Off to the Clouds", the debut album of FH HF, was released under the label Eastern Nurseries in 2019.
Shō is an alias of Florian Sankt, a sound artist based in Berlin. Carving out exceptionally diverse pieces from all segments of the electronic music spectrum, the sound of Shō has been informed not only by the realms of techno and ambient, but also refined by musique concrète mentalities, rich in field recordings, expressive rhythms, textures and innovative uses of sound design. The following mix is a bright reflection of all of the above: a dazzling display of sonic variety and artistic forwardness, bookended by hums of nature, yet saturated by sounds from the future.
The air above a cityscape is never still. At sundown, the seeming emptiness envelops one in melancholy; as the night goes on, all the neon lights, looming structures and dancing smoke silhouettes come along to keep the company. The urban soundtrack put together by Alethe is a reflection of both the cold and the welcoming, the abrasive and the melodic, all of which makes apparent the dualistic allure of the city. The Russian artist's music has been released on tape labels such as Audio. Visuals. Atmosphere., Holy Geometry and Strange Rules. Alethe's mix for Amulet of Tears contains many of his recently favoured works and inspirations.
The seventh Amulet carries elements of water, burgeoning life and subtly glowing electricity. The Bulgarian artist Evitceles has been exploring themes of (un)natural life and personal vulnerability in his musical work since 2014, releasing a variety of albums and collections, several on labels such as Yerevan Tapes and Opal Tapes. The compositions of Evitceles do not shy away from tonal experimentations, unique forms of songwriting as well as different uses of rhythm and style; listening to his work feels much like a slow walk through a gallery of impressionistic paintings.
Ardor is the brilliant collaborative effort of Canadian sound artists B.P. and Body of Intrigue. As a duo, the two have recorded and released joint works on the Male Activity label, previously ran by B.P.; as Ardor, they continue to foster a sonic garden of flowers seemingly blooming and withering over and over, with a scarce piece of everyday meditation occurring in between each cycle. The mix for Amulet of Tears includes only original works, either recorded individually by each of the two, or created together.
Porto-based musician Rui P. Andrade, under the title of Canadian Rifles, transmits a palette of sounds that seems familiarly acquainted with the approaching cold in the Northern Hemisphere. The fifth chapter of Amulet of Tears is rich in expressive instrumental recordings, songs, bits and monologues of everyday being, as well as comforting memories of times and experiences that may have never even happened. The artist's work includes running the label Eastern Nurseries, a duo project HRNS alongside FARWARMTH, several EPs on the aforementioned label and a full-length album titled "Atoll" released through Audio Visuals Atmosphere in 2019.
Extending from a rough, metallic shell, the mix by Jonathan Bergen (under the name of Amethyst) grows into a dazzling torrent of noise, drone and song. Ever-changing and layered, the hour-long sonic cascade resembles a rebirth, an experience of being mangled and reshaped, being forced to confront the full spectrum of emotion and to face its totality. Amethyst, the musical project, has been active since 2017, delivering several cassette releases on the experimental-ambient circuit, much of the music fusing organic samples with inanimate, heavy forces of noise. As a result, the music of Amethyst is unique in its synthesis of intensity and vulnerability.
Personal experiences, uplifting hopes, meditative fantasies and harsh realities are all carried in the third Amulet by Anasisana. A visual artist as well as a musician under several different aliases (Buried Alive, Nonchalant, Perfect Stranger), the Tunisian creator blends emotional slowcore songs, hypnotizing melodies and more abrasive experimental rhythms to breathe new air into the accustomed field of ambient music. His most recent release, a cassette titled "Perfect Stranger", was released by Trust Collective in September of 2020. In the work of Anasisana, thoughtfulness and subtlety shine a bright, yet melancholic light.
A companion and a friend, Undveld guides through a path of piercing heights and desolate, barren plains. Every peak of emotional distortion seems physical, each pulled string heartfelt and raw. The young Lithuanian artist has amassed an extensive discography of experimental electronic work released on offworldcolonies, Perfect Aesthetics, static motion including others, his talent in production marked by deeply sensitive compositions and dynamic structures. It is safe to assume that there is much discovery to be made on the artistic and personal journey with Undveld.
The first Amulet unravels with a piano chord, a flurry of distant voices and a familiar dusty hiss. With a body of work equally cinematic and sonically vivid, Japanese composer yolabmi has already set a considerable musical footprint with a string of albums released on VAAGNER, Casement Exchange, Perfect Aesthetics and other initiatives. Each segment and soundscape by yolabmi appears to be a dream-like vision where intimate atmospheres, alluring melodies and unexplored experiments intertwine. The following adventure seems to lead through many different lands.
